QMS Adds Sonnetech's Colorific Color Matching Technology to the QMS magicolor 330 Color Laser Printer.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1998--Sonnetech, Ltd. today announced that QMS, Inc. will bundle Colorific(R) for Printers(TM) with all shipments of the magicolor 330 color laser printers.

Colorific for Printers enables accurate screen to printer color matching with fast printing throughput, providing QMS(R) magicolor 330 users with What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG) color output.

"A primary goal in developing the QMS magicolor 330 was to simplify color matching for both professional and novice color users," said Grady Yarbrough, color product line manager at QMS. "Colorific complements the QMS magicolor 330's built in color matching capabilities by making it easy for users to get WYSIWYG color matching."

Colorific for Printers is based on the world's leading color management software technology. Colorific enables users to change the look of their desktop to emulate the color characteristics of the QMS printer. Colorific for Printers quickly and easily guides the user through a brief series of images designed to capture information about how the users' unique monitor and system configuration display and print color.

Using this data Colorific changes the perceived gamma and color temperature of the monitor to match the printers' output. The information is stored for use even after the user reboots.

Creating a display profile is the only way to ensure color matched results from your printer. Colorific creates an accurate ICC profile of the monitor and feeds that information into ICM (Microsoft's Image Color Matching system) and ColorSync in the Macintosh platform. The software also creates a PostScript Color Space Array (CSA) file which can be downloaded to the printer for additional color matching capability.

Why Wouldn't the Colors Match?

Monitors and printers each speak a different language when it comes to producing color. Monitors produce red, green, and blue (RGB) light that, in various combinations, can render a large number of colors.

The inks in printed material use cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY) colorants to produce colors. Printers typically add some black colorant to produce darker grays, black and darker colors. (This, then, is known as CMYK color.) Colorific for printers adjusts the screen to make it better match the CMYK color balance of the printer.
