Q.H. COACH RESIGNS INCIDENT AT FLORIDA SOCCER TOURNAMENT LED TO DEPARTURE.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

QUARTZ quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  HILL - Quartz Hill High boys' soccer coach Andre Matalon, who led the Rebels to a Southern Section Division I co-championship less than a year ago and started this season with hopes for a national title, resigned Monday amid growing player discontent.

Matalon's replacement for the rest of the season is expected to be Tony Bruce, a local Olympic Development Program coach, once Bruce is approved by the school district.

Matalon's resignation came after an incident last month when Quartz Hill was in Florida for the Student Sports Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

``The message now is that they just need to forget about the other stuff and concentrate on improving their play,'' Bruce said. ``There's a lot of talent here, regardless of who the coach is. The players play, the coach just organizes.''

It was a stunning turn, however, for the Rebels, who finished 28-0-2 only a season ago, tying Leuzinger of Lawndale in the section-championship game. The team started this year ranked No. 3 in the nation by Student Sports magazine.
