Q: do you outsource all or part of your association's human resources function? If so, how does it work? If not, what are your reservations? Our company employs an in-house human resources The fancy word for "people." The human resources department within an organization, years ago known as the "personnel department," manages the administrative aspects of the employees. professional who is shared with another association management company. The key to making a shared situation work well is to ensure proper administrative support at both organizations. This extra support will help ensure that the focus of the HR director is on the issues of the organization rather than following up on vacation forms and sick day totals. In addition, we have contracted with an HR consultant to work with our company on issues that may be extremely complex. Our consultant works with us to resolve issues and handle terminations, as they can become a legal nightmare if not done correctly. One other resource that we use is the Employers Association of New Jersey. They have been of great help in determining whether an employee is exempt or nonexempt and with issues dealing with overtime payments, company policies, and more. William D. We have a full-time human resources director with a part-time administrative assistant. Our HR department has several functions; reviewing applications and interviewing candidates for open positions, advising managers on personnel issues, ensuring that we are in compliance with all regulations, and serving as a counselor for employees regarding work issues. While we could contract out parts of the reviewing applications and interview process, I think having the HR position inside gives us an advantage. The HR director conducts phone interviews to screen out applicants. She then works with managers and other staff in the department with an opening. This process assures us that there is a good fit for new employees. On a daily basis, she answers questions from employees and managers. She has an open door policy with which staff are very pleased. I don't think we could achieve this with an outsourced HR function. We do, however, work with an HR consultant for some of our managerial training. This has proved to be useful in the past.
