Why do some people vomit vomit /vom·it/ (vom´it)

It is not just a matter of pushing oneself too hard. Some people vomit because the exercise shook their stomachs too hard. The spasmic waves force the acids to rise.

Is this a common problem with athletes, and is it serious?

No. It only happens to a small percentage of people. It's considered to be more of an inconvenience.

What kinds of strenuous exercise can give you an upset stomach?

Running is one, but any activity that requires constant movement can cause spasms.

What can you do to avoid this problem? Are there warning signs that tell you to slow down or stop?

Since there is no cure, the best medicine is prevention. Don't eat two hours before you are going to exercise vigorously. Warm up and start slowly. If you are feeling nauseous nauseous /nau·seous/ (naw´shus) pertaining to or producing nausea.

 while exercising, stop. If you are continually vomiting vomiting, ejection of food and other matter from the stomach through the mouth, often preceded by nausea. The process is initiated by stimulation of the vomiting center of the brain by nerve impulses from the gastrointestinal tract or other part of the body.  after you exercise, there are medications called anti-colinergics to help quiet your stomach. The more fit you are, the less likely you will feel nauseous.
