 what it used to be.

In 1987, when we did our first cookie article, the lowest-fat category consisted of Fig Newtons The Fig Newton is a brand of fig bar (in Europe, fig roll), a soft, cake-like pastry filled with fig jam. A trademarked product of Nabisco, Fig Newtons originated in the United States and have since spread across the world. , a few graham crackers, and one brand of raisin raisin, in botany and cooking

biscuits. Period. And they had two grams of fat.

This year, we found 133 cookies with two grams of fat or less. Two-thirds had no fat at all. Entire new lines, like Nabisco's SnackWell's, have charged into the marketplace backed by heavy-duty coupon and advertising campaigns. And super-sellers like Oreos and Chips Ahoy! now have "reduced-fat" versions.

Are the new, low-fat cookies good for you? Far from it. Are they less bad? You bet.

OREO ELSE

Let's get one thing straight. Fat-free, low-fat, or even reduced-fat cookies beat the competition hands down.

Take sandwich cookies. Why swallow swallow, common name for small perching birds of almost worldwide distribution. There are about 100 species of swallows, including the martins, which belong to the same family. Or let's say you're stuck on chocolate chip Chocolate chips are small chunks of chocolate. They are often sold in a round, flat-bottomed teardrop shape (similar to a Hershey's Kiss). They are available in numerous sizes, from large to miniature, but are usually around 1 cm in diameter. . Nabisco Chips Ahoy! and most other brands are going to run you seven or eight grams of fat in a one-ounce serving.

Why sweat it? At the very least, you can switch to Reduced Fat Chips Ahoy! and save two grams of fat. But don't stop there. Entenmann's 50% Less Fat, SnackWell's Chocolate Chip, and Small World Chocolate Chip Animal Grahams get down to three or four grams of fat.

Until someone figures out how to take all the fat out of chocolate chips and cremefilled sandwich cookies, you won't find good-tasting fatfree versions of either.

HOW SWEET IT IS

You wouldn't want a sugarfree cookie. It just wouldn't taste like a cookie. But from a health standpoint The Standpoint is a newspaper published in the British Virgin Islands. It was originally published under the name Pennysaver, largely as a shopping-coupon promotional newspaper, but since emerged as one of the most influential sources of journalism in the , the less sugar the better.

Sugar isn't only bad for your teeth, it also helps explain why even fat-free cookies can be fattening fat·ten

The best thing about sugar is that food labels are now required to list the amount. Some handy rules of thumb:

THE GOOD STUFF

You might think it's silly to expect a cookie to supply vitamins, minerals, fruits, whole grains, or anything else nutritious nutritious /nu·tri·tious/ (noo-trish´us) affording nourishment.

. Fair enough.

But consider this: Most Americans--who are busy fighting the spare tires around their waists--don't have a lot of spare calories to waste on cookies.

So would it be so terrible if cookies gave you some good stuff along with the good taste?

A few do, but you usually have to visit a health food store to find them. Health Valley adds carrot carrot, common name for some members of the Umbelliferae, a family (also called the parsley family) of chiefly biennial or perennial herbs of north temperate regions.  powder to most of its cookies.
