Purses and pearls and ladies who lunch. (Easy Does It).

What better time then the glorious summertime to have a few friends--or lots of friends--over for a leisurely lunch and visit? This simple luncheon is fun from start to finish, with an adorable a·dor·a·ble

with pearls for the center of the table and tiny mossed compacts with names in "lipstick" on the mirror for place cards. You could set each table with a different shaped mossed purse with flowers or with hats or hatboxes or gloves or other vintage items, mossed or not. These table decorations would be wonderful for a bridesmaid's luncheon, shower, retirement party, birthday party, or tea party for big or little girls. Beautiful placemats made of fabric, glass and mirrors cut into rounds, and braid add extra flair to an inviting table in the sunshine. An easy, cool menu that can be made ahead will keep you out of the kitchen and with your guests once the plates are served. Begin your guest list and have some fun preparing this special summertime party!

ROUND GLASS AND MIRROR PLACEMATS

You will need:
Fabric of your choice; a 14-inch square
for each placemat (The black and
white checked fabric is by Waverly)
Another fabric if you decide to put
fabric on the back so that placemats
can be used on either side
Two 13-inch diameter rounds of
1/8-inch thick glass that have been
sanded very smooth on the edges or
one 13- inch round of 1/8-inch glass
that has been sanded very smooth on
the edges and one 13-inch round
of 1/8-inch mirror that has been
care fully sanded on the edges (I had
these cut at a glass and mirror shop)
2 1/2 yards upholstery braid (1/2 to 3/4
  inches wide) for each placemat
527 clear multi-purpose cement bond glue

Sew the upholstery upholstery, general term for household fittings, hangings, curtains, cushions, and covers. It refers to stuffed, padded, and spring-cushioned furniture, such as chairs and sofas, or to the usually decorative materials and fabrics that cover them.  braid together with a zigzag stitch stitch (stich)

down the middle to achieve a strip that is about 1-inch wide and 1 1/4 yards long to glue around the edge of each placemat. Trace the fabric with the 13-inch diameter glass as a pattern. If you are using two different fabrics, trace each piece of fabric in this way. Cut out fabric and place pieces of fabric back to back with the right side showing under each piece of glass. Stack the two pieces of glass with the fabric between or the 13-inch glass round, fabric, and 13-inch mirror round together. Working with a small amount of braid with glue on it at a time, carefully wrap the braid around the sandwiched glass, fabric, and glass or glass, fabric, and mirror until the braid surrounds the placemat.
