Purging agent saves molder $2600 per purge!

A dramatic demonstration of the economic value of efficient machine purging--especially in these days of high resin prices--was obtained from a commercial test at a U.S. injection molder. The test involved a color change from black to green polyethylene on a 4500-ton press with 105-lb barrel capacity. The test compared standard cast-acrylic purging compound with a polystyrene-based purging compound designed for thermoplastics processed at 350 to 680 F. Called Asaclean UP, the PS-base purging agent is supplied by Asaclean-Sun Plastech, Inc., Parsippany, N.J.

Previously, purging required 4 hr and 100 lb of cast acrylic plus 200 lb of PE. With Asaclean, purging took only 30 min and used 30 lb of purge and 60 lb of PE. The cost of purging material used was cut by 64%. The total cost savings gained by using Asaclean was more than $2600 per purge, according to Asaclean president Glenn Kornfeld.
