After a loveless childhood, a difficult adolescence, and her father's death, Amanda Travis flees Toronto for Palm Beach, Florida Palm Beach is an incorporated town in Palm Beach County, Florida. The Intracoastal Waterway separates it from the neighboring cities of West Palm Beach and Lake Worth. As of 2000, Palm Beach had a year-round population of 10,468, with an estimated seasonal population of 30,000.  and doesn't look back. We meet her nearly a decade later as a twice-divorced, world-weary criminal defense attorney whose jaded cynicism belies her 28 years. Then Amanda learns that her estranged es·trange

 mother has been charged with murder and that her lawyer is Amanda's first ex-husband. She returns to Canada where her present collides with her long-buried past. Despite a contrived premise, this thriller is gripping, jet-propelled by solid suspense writing, an attractively complex protagonist, and more than a few surprises.

The storyline contains some casual sex and incest and occasionally uses strong language. Hicks's reading deflates Amanda's caustic humor, but she capably manages multiple accents and is especially good during dramatic high points. Francine Levitov, Attorney, New York New York, state, United States
