Puma Technology Ships Two Millionth Unit of its TranXit Wireless Infrared Software; Interoperability and Compatibility Make TranXit the IR Software of Choice for Leading Notebook Computer Manufacturers.

SANTA CLARA Santa Clara, city, Cuba
Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 1, 1995--Puma Technology announced that it has surpassed the two million unit shipment mark for its popular TranXit wireless infrared file transfer and data synchronization Keeping data in two or more computers up-to-date so that each repository contains the identical information. Data in handheld devices and laptops often require synchronization with the data in a desktop machine or server.  software. TranXit is bundled with infrared-equipped computers and infrared adapters from more than 30 industry-leading manufacturers worldwide, marking Puma as the industry leader of both wireless infrared connectivity and mobile data exchange solutions. Indicating not only the widespread adoption of TranXit, the two million units shipped milestone also points to the explosive growth of wireless infrared connectivity as a key element of the mobile computing Using a computing device while in transit. Mobile computing implies wireless transmission, but wireless transmission does not necessarily imply mobile computing. Fixed wireless applications use satellites, radio systems and lasers to transmit between permanent objects such as buildings  marketplace.

"Puma has established itself as the leader in IR interoperability and connectivity," said Randy Giusto, manager of Mobile Computing Research for industry analyst International Data Corp. "No other company has as much to offer in IR software, and Puma is well positioned to make a mark in the emerging IR market."

Interoperability For All

In the burgeoning personal and mobile data exchange marketplace, today's notebook and desktop computers, as well as rapidly evolving IR-based computing devices such as printers, local area network nodes and multifunction peripherals, commonly utilize different operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap.  and device drivers. As the leading provider of high-performance IR-centric software solutions, Puma has designed its TranXit offerings to fully comply with IrDA (Infrared Data Association See IrDA.

A TranXit-equipped notebook running Microsoft's Windows 3.1 or Windows 95, for instance, would seamlessly exchange data with another personal computer utilizing IBM's OS/2. With its comprehensive library of device drivers and DLLs, Puma ensures hardware compatibility with every IrDA-compliant infrared notebook, desktop and infrared adapter on the market. In addition, Puma is the only company whose software supports both the 115 Kbps Serial IR (SIR) and 1.2 Mbps Fast IR (FIR) IrDA standards. Puma has also planned forthcoming support for the next generation of 4 Mbps computers and adapters in the near future.

"Puma provides the industry's leading high-performance wireless infrared compatibility and interoperability solutions, and we are pleased to offer these key mobile computing features to our notebook users," said Rob Rosborough, director of Sharp Electronics' Computer Products Division. "Our 3020 and 3060 series notebooks currently ship preloaded with Puma's TranXit infrared wireless connectivity software, and our 9010, 9040 and 9070 series notebooks will come bundled with Puma's 4 Mbps version of TranXit beginning in Q1 1996."

Solutions for Today and Tomorrow

TranXit is the industry's first mobile data exchange software designed specifically for wireless infrared connectivity, and is the only IrDA-compatible solution for both IrDA's Serial and Fast IR specifications. Puma will soon unveil plans to leverage its leadership position in the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  IR market by expanding into the yet-untapped retail channel with a series of consumer-oriented products that utilize higher-speed transfer rates and provide advanced "content-aware" data exchange capabilities. This marketing push coincides with related moves by other industry leaders, such as Microsoft, which recently announced it has added support for IrDA connectivity to its Windows 95 operating system. With that announcement, Microsoft has validated the IR communications concept -- a technology approach adopted by Puma in 1993.

"We are very pleased that Microsoft has validated the import of IR connectivity in Windows 95 environments," said Bradley Rowe, Puma's president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization.  IR-centric `promiscuous' data exchange, but also to ensure that users of different operating systems could effectively communicate with one another. We believe that interoperability and compatibility are the most important issues in this growing market. Puma has already taken Windows 95 users into consideration with our TranXit software solutions as well as providing support for and seamless interoperability with Windows 3.1, Windows For Workgroups and OS/2. We're excited about the potential for market growth which could be spurred by Microsoft's commitment to offer IR support in Windows 95."

At the recent COMDEX/Fall, attendees were able to see and try Puma's TranXit software at the booths of many of their OEM partners, including ACER, Adaptec, AST (AST Computer, Irvine, CA) A PC manufacturer founded in 1980 by Albert Wong, Safi Quershey and Tom Yuen (A, S and T).
