The campground is located near the small town of Mezcales in the state of Nayarit, just a few miles north of Puerto Vallarta, which is in the state of Jalisco. Locals joke that the bridge across the Rio Ameca (Ameca River) is the longest in the world, as "it takes an hour to cross it." The bridge itself isn't very long -- it just happens to span the state border and the time change between the Central and Mountain time zones.

The malecon -- an expansive walkway that borders the ocean and is decorated by numerous sculptures -- is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

Across the street from the malecon is the zocalo zo·ca·lo

, or town square, presided over by a statue of General Vallarta, for whom the town is named. Artists and crafts people offer their wares in the zocalo and along the malecon, and numerous small shops in the downtown district offer a wide variety of local items, jewelry and souvenirs.

A short drive to the south is Mismaloya, an area that became an overnight sensation during filming of Tennessee Williams' "Night of the Iguana iguana (ĭgwä`nə), name for several large lizards of the family Iguanidae, found in tropical America and the Galapagos. The common iguana (Iguana iguana ," due to a combination of Richard Burton's and Elizabeth Taylor's romance and the outrageous antics of co-star Ava Gardner.

Taylor fans can visit her former residence in Puerto Vallarta, "Casa Kimberly," a pale pink structure joined by a pale pink overhead walkway to a house across the street (which was formerly owned by Richard Burton). Casa Kimberly is now privately owned; tours are available for about $5 (U.S. funds).

More recently, the big-screen release "Predator," starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was filmed in and around El Eden, a restaurant and bar complex nestled in the jungle about 10 minutes from the beach area at Mismaloya. The shell of a helicopter used in the movie is proudly displayed at El Eden, which was a popular tourist spot long before its movie debut. Visitors enjoy dining in a shaded area in the restaurant's huge palapa pa·la·pa

Swimming in the pool and sliding down the smooth, sloping rock ledge of the waterfall are not only allowed, but encouraged; the venue also offers hiking trails and a number of vendors selling quality blankets, clothing, jewelry, crafts and other items.

There are a number of sightseeing options available from the campground. Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive (about $8 U.S. from the campground into town) and, once in town, everything in the downtown area is within walking distance. There are several tour services that offer a variety of packages such as local highlights, jungle tours, horseback riding packages, shopping trips, bay cruises and whale watching. More adventurous souls can take the local buses just about anywhere around the bay for 1.5 pesos (less than 25 cents) per ride.

Puerto Vallarta KOA is located at Km. 149, about a quarter mile south of Mezcales and six miles north of Puerto Vallarta on the Tepic-Vallarta highway (Mexican Federal Hwy. 200). The phone (and fax) number is 011-523-298-0853.
