SMOKERS will be able to buy herbal cigarettes from vending machines in pubs after the ban is introduced, it emerged yesterday.

The Irish Cigarette Machine Operators Association is pressing ahead with plans to stock up on herbal brands after learning they won't be affected by the new laws.

But the Irish Cancer Society slammed the latest move as a danger to workers' health.

A spokeswoman said: "Herbal cigarettes produce a higher level of carbon monoxide carbon monoxide, chemical compound, CO, a colorless, odorless, tasteless, extremely poisonous gas that is less dense than air under ordinary conditions. It is very slightly soluble in water and burns in air with a characteristic blue flame, producing carbon dioxide;  than tobacco ones, and in high concentrations this can be deadly.

"They are not safe alternatives by any means."

A Health Department spokesman dismissed this is a desperate bid to make up some ground in a battle they can't win.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Micheal Martin had his lungs tested yesterday to highlight the danger of lung disease.
