Publishing Fees in Academia. One of the authors reviewed available literature and analyzed issues dealing with publishing in academia with limited resources (Snell et. al 1976, Snell et. al. 1994.) One of the problems or opportunities now associated with publishing in higher education is the cost. Numerous high quality journals have discovered that to survive with diminishing resources, they must ask the author or authors to help pay for the printing and distribution of the article. Funds from the authors can not alone support the publication. Because they are not mass marketed, do not have major advertisers or associations to support them, expenses must be shared with the writers. It is not uncommon, for college and universities to pay for publishing costs.(*) These costs include pagination fees, manuscript reviewer fees, subscription costs, and mandatory membership if an association is in part sponsoring the journal.(**) A selected list that has some form of publishing fee includes the following: American Sociological Review The American Sociological Review is the flagship journal of the American Sociological Association (ASA). The ASA founded this journal (often referred to simply as ASR) in 1936 with the mission to publish original works of interest to the sociology discipline in general, new , American Economic Review, Americas Review, Economica, Psychological Reports, Psychological Bulletin, Psychology: Journal of Human Behavior, Education, Journal of Instructional Psychology, Reading Improvement, College Student Journal, Sociological Abstracts, the late Southern Journal of Educational Research, Peace Research Abstracts, Peace Research, the late College Student Survey, Community College Social Science Survey, International Journal of Management, International Biographical Association Newsletter, American Journal of Sociology Established in 1895, the American Journal of Sociology (AJS) is the oldest scholarly journal of sociology in the United States. Conclusion It would appear that publishing fees will remain part of the future in academia. (*) The authors' school pays pagination fees every other year, once per annum. (**) Fees may be covered in grants that are funded from outside of academia, but the results of the research from the grant are intended for publication in journals that have a small but important population of educational and professional readers. Additionally, individuals who give papers at conferences where expenses can no longer be covered by their host academic institutions, must be considered part of publishing costs. Special note: the Journal of Economics and Sociology go out of their way to indicate that fees are not charged to the writer. It would appear that publishing fees are becoming more common.
