Publicly traded forest products companies post strong third quarters.


Business is looking up for the movers and shakers of the forest products industry. Several of the publicly traded companies posted double-digit profits in the third quarter of 2004, compared to the same period last year.

Weyerhaeuser Co. of Federal Way, WA, reported its highest quarterly profit ever in the third quarter ended Sept. 28. The company reported earnings of $594 million, compared to $82 million in the same period last year. It was a strong follow-up to the company's second quarter profit of $369 million.

Temple-Inland Inc. of Austin, TX, reported a third quarter net income of $41 million, compared to a third quarter net loss of $3 million last year. Total third-quarter revenues were $1.194 billion. Sales of particleboard par·ti·cle·board or particle board

 Co.'s third quarter profits reached $78 million on total revenues of $700 million. Lumber shipments for the Vancouver, BC, company were especially strong. It cautioned, however, "The continued strength of the Canadian dollar is expected to negatively impact earnings going forward."

Seattle-based Plum Creek Timber Plum Creek Timber (NYSE: PCL) is the largest private landowner in the United States. Most of its lands were originally purchased as timberland.[1]

Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, Plum Creek was spun off from Burlington Resources as a master limited
 Co. Inc. reported third quarter earnings of $77 million on revenues of $363 million. Quarterly earnings were 71% higher compared to third quarter 2003. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Plum Creek, said, "The company continues to benefit from strengthened demand from our" customers who produce pulp, paper and solid wood products."

International Paper of Stamford, CT, reported third-quarter earnings from continuing operations continuing operations

Parts of a business that are expected to be maintained as an ongoing segment of an overall business operation. Income and losses from continuing operations are reported separately if any segments have been discontinued during the
 of $208 million, an increase of 84% from 2003's third quarter and of 148% from 2004's second quarter.

Atlanta-based Georgia-Pacific Corp. reported third quarter 2004 income from continuing operations of $239 million, an increase of 30% compared to the same period in 2003. A.D. "Pete Correll, G-P G-P Gel'fand - Pinsker (channel code)  chairman, said, "Our third quarter results demonstrate the continuing success of our business strategy to focus on profitability and product improvement, especially in our consumer products business."
