Publications professionals from around the country "hit the jackpot" at the fourth annual Agricultural Publications Summit, held July 22-25 in Reno, Nev. Professional improvement, networking and fun were all a part of the combined meeting of three organizations: the American Agricultural Editors' Association, the Livestock livestock

Ambassador George McGovern George Stanley McGovern, (born July 19, 1922) is a former United States Representative, Senator, and Democratic presidential nominee. McGovern lost the 1972 presidential election in a landslide to incumbent Richard Nixon.  officially opened the conference with his presentation, "The Third Freedom: Ending Hunger in Our Time." McGovern helped those attending realize the impact of giving children what many take for granted--enough food to eat and an education.

Writing and design were the focus of this year's meeting, but there were also sessions offering information on management, photography and computer skills.

Several authors were presenters at this year's meeting, including Patricia O'Conner, the author of Woe is I and several other titles, and Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Two of this year's speakers hailed from international roots. David Markey of IFP (1) (Intelligent Forms Processing) Using advanced techniques to scan documents and determine their data content. See ICR.

(2) (Integer Factorization Problem) The difficulty of finding prime numbers in an encryption key.
 Media Ltd., Dublin, Ireland, presented information about attracting readers and advertisers in a declining market. Jorgen Lund Christiansen of Skanderborg, Denmark, presented the By Line Book Club session, discussing his book, 11 Attitudes to the Crops of the Future.

In addition, this year's Summit offered two informational panel discussions. The first was a discussion by three agro-terrorism experts. The second panel was made up of farmers from across the country to let publications professionals know "what real readers want."
