Public defender's office manager accused of theft.

Hollis "Holly" Babb, 51, is scheduled to enter a plea Dec. 1 in the 11 felony and nine misdemeanor counts against her.

Babb was arraigned Oct. 27.

 the indictment, Babb used the public defender's office credit card to purchase property valued at up to $50,000 over a four-year period, from January 1998 until Dec. 31, 2002.

The thefts reached as much as $10,000 in a single six-month span, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors also allege that Babb attempted to destroy or alter business records of the public defenders public defender, governmental official who represents indigent persons accused of crime. U.S. Supreme Court decisions expanding the right to counsel to pretrial proceedings and holding that a person cannot be sentenced to even one day in jail unless a lawyer was  office between January and June 2002.

Public defender Carol Hamilton declined to comment last week, confirming only that Babb worked in the office for 10 years and saying she is to be called as a witness.
