(Updates).The nation's energy-intensive factory farms, where routine cruelty to animals cruelty to animals n. the crime of inflicting physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, usually a tame one, beyond necessity for normal discipline. It can include neglect that is so monstrous (withholding food and water) that the animal has suffered, died or goes hand in hand with air and groundwater pollution, are being confronted with calls for new ethical standards (see "The Case Against Meat," cover story, January/February 2002). Last May, leading chefs, farmers and politicians gathered at Manhattan's Blue Smoke Restaurant to applaud the proposed Animal Welfare Institute (AWI AWI Armstrong World Industries, Inc (Lancaster, PA) AWI Australian Wool Innovation Limited AWI Agency for Workforce Innovation (Florida) AWI Animal Welfare Institute AWI American War of Independence ) Humane On-Farm Pig Husbandry protocol. The standards include such measures as prohibition of routine use of antibiotics and of crate confinement. As pork producers, McDonald's and other chains consider the protocol, AWI has also combined efforts with the Society for Animal Protective Legislation The Society for Animal Protective Legislation (SAPL), the legislative arm of the Animal Welfare Institute. SAPL has worked for the successful adoption of over 15 federal laws, including the Animal Welfare Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Humane Slaughter Act and the Marine (SAPL SAPL Society for Animal Protective Legislation SAPL Saudi Arabian Parsons Limited SAPL Societe d'Astronomie Populaire de Limoges (French) SAPL South African Public Libraries SAPL Semantic Agent Programming Language ) to enforce the 1958 Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.
