Before returning to Albion I took a look around and was delighted to see that nice site archeire [architecture Eire geddit] at www.archeire.com claiming back Peter Rice, an Irishman hitherto too frequently described as a UK citizen. Funny that, my impression is that over here he has always been billed as an Irishman who couldn't get interesting enough work in his homeland. Whatever, on archeire's home page he joins Eileen Gray, Michael Scott and Kevin Roche. Just a few difficulties here: like Rice, Roche made his name big elsewhere, Eileen Gray ditto and she never even bothered to qualify. And P. Rice was, er, an engineer. Still, rewriting history is an essential element in the great architectural arcana: note, for example, how we all view most significant nineteenth-century European engineers as closet architects. And now twentieth-century engineers are being reeled in as well. Sigfried Giedion is ultimately to blame of course.
