DJ Kool (born John W. Bowman, Jr.) is a rapper in the late 1990s who produced various popular rap singles. DJs scratched and spun records Spun Records is a psychedelic trance record label established in 1999 by Seth Hoffmann, Bradd Hosking, and G.M.S.. It was the first psy-trance label in the United States. Rappers twisted words and ideas into improbable rhymes, creating new meanings. Before hip hop were mainstream (in 1985 the Grammys created the hip hop category), the early pioneers lived intensely. Thinking on your feet, under pressure, is the top of the game in breaking, locking, popping, uprock, krumpin', fast-footwork, rap, and scratchin'. This competitive spirit ignites the best parts of the film, 8 Mile, and the new documentary Krumped; even the over-produced, hyped, Star-Search style of dancing in the movie You Got Served (2004) catches its raw joy. Slamming down a move or outwitting a challenger with rhymes and moves--on the beat--demands the highest mental and physical imagination. Everything is focused, pushed fast-forward on adrenaline, which causes the poetic and dance styles to morph so quickly that you can't keep up. Sampling and remixing from the world's music and dance styles, hip hop has become multicultural, multinational, and multivocal. Since the early 1980s it has fed concert dancing, from postmodern to tap and even ballet. One of the earliest choreographers who fused breaking and popping with modern dance was Doug Elkins. For several years Elkins offered workshops in Europe, where hip-hop groups like France's Compagnie Kafig and Sweden's Moves Per Minute have thrived. David Neumann danced with Elkins for years before going independent. Now a choreographer/actor, Neumaun is a master-melder of hip hop and modern dance. In Pearl River (2000), he showed the connections between Kung fu, hip hop, and modern dance. In his solos to Tom Waits songs, Neumann breaks down to the floor, then spins up to his feet, popping and locking in the silky phrases that are part of a new breed of jazz dance. But by far the most successful American hip-hop company is Rennie Harris PureMovement, founded and directed by Rennie Harris of Philadelphia. Harris danced since he was a kid hanging at parties or in the streets of Philly's "Badlands badlands, area of severe erosion, usually found in semiarid climates and characterized by countless gullies, steep ridges, and sparse vegetation. Badland topography is formed on poorly cemented sediments that have few deep-rooted plants because short, heavy showers ." Now, PureMovement is on concert stages nationally and internationally. Since Harris has survived into his forties, he has taken the mantel of elder statesman, historian, teacher, and defender of hip hop's best values. Harris experienced guns and death, and he is tired of the hip hop that glorifies violence. For the last twelve years, Harris has been dancing a remarkable solo that grows and changes as Ire does. In its first manifestation in Students of the Asphalt Jungle, Harris performed with arrogant bravado and harsh fury. As Rosie Perez (once a hip hopper) explained, hip hop is free and soulful, and expresses the deepest feelings of love or rage. Facing violence with dancing and rhyming is as fearless as standing naked in front of an Uzi machine gun singing, "Hip Hop, It Don't Stop!" Only the bold can do it. Talking the Talk Hip-hop dialect shifts between dancers, cities, coasts, and countries. What most hip-hop dancers share is body language and a fierce love for the dance. There are, however, some widespread terms, and the following glossary (which is by no means definitive) offers a sample of these.
