SA: What exactly is the Institute for Learning Innovation and what type of work do you do?

MA: The Institute for Learning Innovation is a nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

Nonprofits are also called not-for-profit corporations. Nonprofit corporations are created according to state law.
 educational research and development organization established in 1986 in Annapolis, Maryland. We are committed to the understanding and promotion of free-choice learning--the kind of learning that occurs while people visit museums or other cultural institutions, watch television, read a newspaper, attend a play, or surf the Internet. Through basic and applied research, and educational and professional development, the institute focuses on finding innovative ways to understand and facilitate intersections between the free-choice, formal, and workplace educational sectors. By exploring the frontiers of learning and education, the Institute for Learning Innovation is committed to improving both the quantity and quality of lifelong learning Lifelong learning is the concept that "It's never too soon or too late for learning", a philosophy that has taken root in a whole host of different organisations. Lifelong learning is attitudinal; that one can and should be open to new ideas, decisions, skills or behaviors.  experiences available to all people.

So you might be asking about now, "OK, but what do you really do?" Because of my art teaching and museum education background, I work on a number of projects for art museums and performing arts organizations. I've also had the opportunity to work on projects in science, history, and children's museums Children's museums are institutions that provide exhibits and programs that stimulate informal learning experiences for children. In contrast with traditional museums that typically have a hands-off policy regarding exhibits, children's museums feature interactive exhibits that are . For example, a museum might ask me to design an evaluation of their multiple visit museum/school program. I would work with them to articulate articulate /ar·tic·u·late/ (ahr-tik´u-lat)

 desired outcomes, design the methods of collecting evidence (such as observations, interviews, or writing and drawings), collect and analyze the data, and write up the findings and recommendations that will help the organization understand what is going on with that program.

Another part of my work involves developing and conducting professional development experiences for museum practitioners. At the institute, we are committed to assisting museum professionals in learning how to use evaluation to develop better exhibitions and programs which, in turn, will result in richer, more satisfying experiences for museum visitors of all ages. We do this through training workshops, conference presentations, and publications.

SA: What would you like to see happen in the field of museum education in the next five years?

MA: I've noticed that art museum professionals are becoming more receptive receptive /re·cep·tive/ (re-cep´tiv) capable of receiving or of responding to a stimulus.  towards evaluation as both a way to enhance visitors' experiences and as a tool for organizational learning Organizational learning is an area of knowledge within organizational theory that studies models and theories about the way an organization learns and adapts.

 ways to incorporate evaluation into their program planning and implementation process. Certainly, I would like to see this trend continue and I would hope that curators will follow the museum educators' lead and find ways to allow a more diverse range of visitor voices to be reflected in exhibitions.

For museum education, specifically, I would like to see the development of a shared research agenda for art museum education. For example, most art museums have a multiple visit program where students visit several times during a school year. Yet, very little research has looked at the effect of these programs on student learning. We do not know how the number of visits influences the degree of learning. And we need more information on the kinds of learning that are best facilitated in a museum. A museum education research agenda would help guide graduate students in their search for thesis and dissertation dis·ser·ta·tion
