Promoting Women's Sports.


More than 1,500 activities held nationwide marked the 15th anniversary of National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 7, 2001, which Congress established to advance equality and access for women in sports. The day is sponsored by a coalition of five groups whose collective membership reaches more than 50 million: Girl Scouts of the USA For Girl Scouts worldwide, see Girl Guide and Girl Scout.

Events ran the gamut from awards ceremonies honoring local female athletes (including members of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team), to silent auctions of women's sporting goods, to essay contests on this year's theme, "No Stopping Us Now." In Washington, D.C., 21 champion female athletes visited more than 70 congressional offices to urge continued support for equal opportunities for females in sports.
