The colorful and animated Brass drew an exciting picture of electronic publishing as he described how, "the ability to distribute what we've been distributing on paper for the past 1,500 years electronically, without the paper, without the forests, without the pulp mills, without the trucks, without the ink, without the returns that you have in the book industry, is going to lower the cost, raise the profits, and create tons more titles than have ever existed before."

Brass's background includes being a reporter and editor at Daily News in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

He has been involved in the business of taking books and turning them into software for the past 20 years. He addressed such topics as:

-- Number of books to be available electronically:

"Right now there's only about 500 bookstore titles available electronically. I would hope that in two years there would be as many as 50,000 titles available electronically," stated Brass. "In five or 10 years, somewhere between 10 and 20 percent of the material on display at this show (Book Expo America) will be delivered primarily as electronic products, and over the next 40 years I would expect 90 percent of what we now call the book business, as well as the magazine business, to be electronically delivered," predicted Brass.

-- Storage and efficiency benefits of electronic books:

"One of the benefits of electronic publishing is density of storage. Instead of having one book in your electronic device it is reasonable to expect that in 10 years you could have tens of thousands, maybe even a hundred thousand books, in a device no bigger than a paperback. A library in your head," stated Brass.

-- The scope of electronic publishing:

He also explained, "A cookbook 10 or 15 years from now may well be a mixture of television and print."

Brass also addressed new advertising opportunities created by electronic publishing as well as security issues. Show guest Thomas described in detail the four levels of security being offered by the Kanakaris Web site NetBooks.com as a result of ION technology. She also explained the ability of NetBooks.com to take one digital source document and replicate it on demand electronically as little or as many times as needed as needed prn.
