A new children's book, Project Puffin The National Audubon Society started Project Puffin in 1973 in an effort to learn how to restore puffins to historic nesting islands in the Gulf of Maine. At that time, literally all the puffin eggs in Maine were located on two small islands -Matinicus Rock andMachias Seal Island. : How We Brought Puffins Back To Egg Rock by Stephen Kress, describes the author's work with Pete Salmansohn to bring back the population of these endearing en·dear·ing

 black-and-white sea birds to Eastern Egg Rock, Maine. Kress provides a detailed description of the struggles and--eventual successes--he and Salmansohn encountered during the project. Combined with a helpful teacher's guide packed with activities, Project Puffin helps kids gain knowledge about sea birds, food chains and important ways to help preserve the environment for wildlife. Designed for children in grades 3 through 6, the guide has over 40 different activities, ranging from art projects to role-playing and wildlife observation. The book is available from Tilbury Tilbury (tĭl`bərē), part of the urban district of Thurrock, Essex, E England. Tilbury Fort originated under Henry VIII; it was rebuilt and strengthened in the 17th cent.  House Publishers for $16.95. The accompanying teacher's guide is $9.95.
