Progymnasmata: Greek Textbooks of Prose Composition and Rhetoric.


The growth of rhetorical criticism Rhetorical criticism is an approach to criticism which is at least as old as Aristotle. Rhetorical criticism studies the use of words and phrases (in the case of visual rhetoric, also visuals) to explicate how arguments have been built to drive home a certain point the author or  in recent years reawakened interest in rhetoric of the Roman empire. , America's foremost authority on ancient rhetoric, provides accurate, authoritative translations of four handbooks (by Aelius Theon Aelius Theon was an Alexandrian sophist and author of a collection of preliminary exercises (progymnasmata) for the training of orators. A brief index lists some of the rhetorical terms discussed; but there are omissions, e.g., ekphrasis enkomion, sunkrisis, thesis, etc. Many of these texts were not available in any translation before; hence this is a useful text that deserves wide use.
