nuclear reactor nuclear reactor, device for producing controlled release of nuclear energy. Reactors can be used for research or for power production. A research reactor is designed to produce various beams of radiation for experimental application; the heat produced is a waste at its Shearon Harris Harris, Scotland: see Lewis and Harris. plant by 2020. No cost estimate
was given, but other utilities have estimated that similar reactors
would run $6 billion to $9 billion.
