for a major event supporting the district's literacy plan.

The event, a fall literacy walk, drew more than 4,000 participants, including students, families and faith-based groups, and raised more than $75,000 to buy books tailored to students' individual reading levels.

The effort was an outgrowth of the district's Comprehensive Literacy Plan, aimed at developing independent readers and writers. The plan is aligned with the district's strategic plan, South Carolina Language Arts language arts

The subjects, including reading, spelling, and composition, aimed at developing reading and writing skills, usually taught in elementary and secondary school.

The need for books at various reading levels was established as part of the literacy plan, and the funds were particularly important in light of school budget cuts.

Research indicates that the availability of an abundance of books appropriate to reading levels helps increase student fluency and comprehension. The books are intended to capture students' interest and provide for a successful reading experience.

The idea for the walk came from Superintendent Randy Bridges, and organizers studied materials and data from other successful events.

Planning for the walk on Sept. 7, 2003, began in the spring. District leaders were identified and a steering committee steerĀ·ing committee
