The project management program teaches professionals to deliver jobs on-time and on budget, passing on the skills necessary to juggle multiple projects and keep on top of schedules and vendors, all the while eyeing the bottom line and maintaining quality control -- no easy task. Students receive practical step-by-step instruction in how to develop and refine their abilities to plan, manage risk and lead a project team, and how to apply these techniques to everyday situations. "Our students say it gives them an edge at work over co-workers who might appear to be less disciplined," said business and management chair Bev Olivier, "and that gives them an added sense of confidence and security as well as bolstering their management skills." Students find the instruction applies to a wide range of fields, including finance, software development, engineering and construction, and participants plan their own projects throughout the program. Extension's project management certificate program debuted in 1991, and though it has remained steadily enrolled for years, enrollment has boosted dramatically since last fall. The certificate program consists of six courses. Students generally complete the standard program in around 12 months. The accelerated program is scheduled so that students interested in intensive study can earn their certificate in half the time.
