Professional issues forums offer valuable information on foundation awards.

The Foundation professional issues forums, "Foundation Funding: How To Get It" and "How Foundation Research Facilitates Follow-On Funding," held on June 20, 2003, at PT 2003, offered valuable information on how to improve the chances of being awarded Foundation funding and on how Foundation-supported research provides the basis for acquiring funding from other funding sources. Information was presented by member of the Foundation's Scientific Review Committee (SRC) and grant recipients.

Diane Jette, PT, DSc, Simmons College; Kathryn Roach, PT, PhD, University Miami: Mary Rodgers, PT, PhD, University of Maryland; and members of the SRC offered tips on how to make applications for foundation funding more competitive and gave insight into what reviewers look for, as well as information on how the committee scores applications and on the similarities between the Foundations and NIH's review processes.

Kathleen Kline Mangione, PT, PhD, GCS, Arcadia University, a 2000 Foundation grant recipient, discussed how presentations of her Foundation-funded research enabled her to secure subsequent funding from NIH. Carolee Winstein, PT, PhD, FAPTA, University of Southern California, principal investigator of the Foundation-funded clinical research network, "PTClinResNet," presented the aims of this network and her plans to secure follow-on funding from other funding sources. Stuart Binder-MacLeod, PT, PhD, FAPTA, SRC member 1997-2001, University of Delaware, discussed the grant mechanisms available in the federal sector that can be used to secure follow-on funding.
