Production index slows in January.


TEMPE, AZ -- The PMI See Private Mortgage Insurance.  index of U.S. manufacturing started 2006 the way it ended 2005: on a downward trend but still well above breakeven breakeven

"The manufacturing sector had another good month during January. New orders and production remain relatively strong, and the panel of respondents In the context of marketing research, a representative sample drawn from a larger population of people from whom information is collected and used to develop or confirm marketing strategy.  is generally upbeat about their business," said ISM chairman Nobert Ore. "It appears that the sector has recovered from the disruptions and dislocations caused by the hurricanes in the Gulf Coast."

In January, new orders fell 1.1 points to 58%, while production fell 1.2 points to 56.6%. Backlogs were up 4 points. Inventories at manufacturers and customers dropped 0.8 and 2 points, respectively. Employment was down 2.3 points, to 51.3.

The categories of electronic components and equipment, and industrial and commercial equipment and computers both reported growth during the month.
