Under the initial phase of the agreement, Procom is supplying the Romanian Ministry of Finance with 53 CD FORCE CD-ROM towers and 53 CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution.  recorders.

James Wainwright, Procom's international account manager who handled the project, along with the company's Romanian reseller, Net Consulting, said the deal emerged from a need by the Romanian Ministry of Finance to modernize its operations and upgrade the infrastructure to international standards.

The project required a large scale records archiving and retrieval system as well as maintaining files on bank registries and transactions. The archiving and retrieval requirements, coupled with the large data load demanded a CD-ROM jukebox See CD-ROM server.  solution, said Wainwright.

The solution developed by Procom is based on the company's cross-platform CD FORCE tower containing 28 CD-ROM drives CD-ROM drives, which today typically means a CD-RW drive that is a combo CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW drive, come in a variety of speeds.  Wainwright, Procom won the contract because of the flexibility of the CD FORCE software, enabling a variety of applications that were not available with other solutions. A key feature is cross-platform support and security and metering features, which are important for archiving.

"They chose Procom because the CD FORCE program itself allows many applications that other programs wouldn't allow, said Wainwright. "Our CD FORCE software was the key. There are plenty of jukeboxes out there, but Procom's CD FORCE software is the most flexible."

The CD FORCE 28-Bay can also be configured with Procom's Hyper CD Technology, which provides the fastest access to data currently on the market, making it a perfect fit for corporations with a large number of users because data can be obtained quickly, easily and simultaneously.

When the unit is configured with CD Changers, the four, 7-drive modules will hold a total of 140 CDs, which is a higher performance solution compared with competitive CD jukeboxes. The CD Changer offers a higher reliability factor than jukeboxes because the array of CD changers does not have a single mechanical failure point.

CD FORCE is built upon Procom's own MESA (Managed Enterprise Storage Architecture), proprietary storage management software that allows the CD FORCE 28-Bay to connect directly to the network cabling and provide access to client workstations without proprietary software. Access is available from most client workstations and communication protocols.

Features include:

-- Supports Microsoft NT Domain Services
-- Supports Novell NetWare Directory Services (NDS)
