Roland J. Trepanier awarded the TAPPI TAPPI Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry  Process and Product Quality Division Technical Award and Richard S. Hunter Prize

Dr. Roland J. Trepanier, president of OpTest Equipment Inc. in Ontario, Canada, has been selected to receive the TAPPI Process and Product Quality Division Technical Award and Richard S. Hunter Prize. This award recognizes outstanding accomplishments or contributions which have advanced the industry's technology.

Trepanier earned a B.Sc. in chemistry and a Ph.D. in nuclear spectroscopy from McGill University. He began his career with Canadian International Paper Research Ltd. in 1977 reaching the position of Senior Research Scientist. He joined Noram Quality Control and Research Ltd. in 1986 as technical director and later served as VP technology and manufacturing and president. Trepanier founded OpTest Equipment Inc. in 1992.

An expert in fiber and paper physics research with emphasis on the relationship to the manufacturing process and final product quality, Trepanier has published over 22 papers, including ten in TAPPI JOURNAL and the Journal of Pulp and Paper Science. He also holds two patents. Trepanier has shared his expertise through TAPPI by authoring and presenting papers at nine TAPPI conferences and by serving as and instructor at the Image Analysis Workshop in 1994. He also served as working group chair for several test methods and technical information papers.

Trepanier joined TAPPI in 1978 and has been active in the Process and Product Quality Division. He served as division secretary from 1995-1996, division vice chairman from 1997-1998 and division chairman from 1999-2000. In addition, he co-chaired the 1999 Engineering/P & PQ Conference and the 2000 Pulping/P & PQ Conference. He also served as technical program chairman of the 1997 and 1998 P & PQ Conferences. In addition to his division activities, Trepanier has served on the Quality and Standards Management Committee of the TAPPI Board of Directors since 1997 and chaired the Knowledge Management Transition team in 2000.

Trepanier is active in a number of other industry organizations including the Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada, the Chemical Institute of Canada The Chemical Institute of Canada is a Canadian professional umbrella organization for chemists (Canadian Society for Chemistry), chemical engineers (Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering) and chemical technologists (Canadian Society for Chemical Technology). , the Association of Chemical Professionals of Ontario, the Canadian Association of Physicists The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) is a Canadian lobby that focuses on creating awareness amongst Canadians and Canadian legislator of Physics issues. The organization was founded in 1945 and currently has over 1000 members. , Sigma Xi Research Society, the Canadian Advisory Council (SCC SCC - strongly connected component ) to ISO/TC6, and the International Association of Scientific Paper Makers.

Charles T. Bohanan of TAPPI awarded the 2005 Process and Product Quality Division Leadership and Service Award

Charles T. Bohanan, TAPPI director of quality and standards, has been selected to receive the Process and Product Quality Division Leadership and Service Award. This award recognizes an individual for outstanding leadership and exceptional service to the division.

Bohanan oversees the Test Methods and Technical Information Papers programs as well as the quality management for the TAPPI staff. He also serves as secretary to the Quality and Standards Management Committee of the Board of Directors, and as Administrator of the TAPPI/ANSI Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO (1) See ISO speed.

He joined the TAPPI staff in 1975 as technical editor for Tappi Journal and has held a variety of positions until he was named technical operations manager in 1997. Along the way he has served as secretary to several committees, including the former Electronic Information Exchange Committee, the Structure and Performance Committee and Goals and Planning Committee of the Technical Operations Council, and the Training and Development Subcommittee of the former Human Resource Development Committee.

In 1991 Bohanan completed requirements for the designation of Certified Association Executive Certified Association Executive (CAE) is a professional certification sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). ), which awarded him the Steve Styron Award as outstanding committee chairman in 1996. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of GSAE and has served as Chairman of the GSAE Foundation Trustees. In addition, Bohanan is a member of the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives The Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives (CESSE) is a non-profit professional organization for executive directors and executive vice presidents of science and engineering societies.

He holds a B.S. in chemistry from Georgia State University History
Georgia State University was founded in 1913 as the Georgia School of Technology's "School of Commerce." The school focused on what was called "the new science of business.
. Prior to his employment with TAPPI, he worked several summers while in school for Bibb Manufacturing Co. and Hercules, Inc. In 1973 he joined Hill Manufacturing Co. as a chemist.

In his spare time Bohanan has served on the governing boards of several local organizations, and can often be found playing trombone for the Seed and Feed Marching Abominable Band, described sometimes in the local press as "a zany Atlanta phenomenon."
