Private equity firms: ranked by private equity assets under management.THE 20 largest private equity firms headquartered in Los Angeles County have more than $42 billion in assets under their management. Leonard Green & Partners LP leads the list with $9 billion, followed closely by Oaktree Capital Management. Los Angeles-based Oaktree has $8.5 billion in private equity assets under management, a $2.2 billion increase from last year. Private equity firms raise their equity from a wide array of sources including high net worth individuals, institutional investors, pension funds, endowments, foundations and banks. Unlike venture capital firms, private equity firms typically invest in well-established companies, often buying them outright in partnership with other equity firms or as part of management-led buyouts. Private equity firms have grown into major players in the mergers and acquisitions market, and because they are unregulated they have become somewhat controversial. Los Angeles-based Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors LP was the most active firm on the list during 2007. The $2.8 billion firm made 31 investments, including two locally. That's up from 14 investments made during 2006. Brothers Tom and Alec Gores both run locally based private equity funds. Tom Gores' Beverly Hills firm, Platinum Equity, has $3.7 billion in assets under management, while Alec Gores' firm, Gores Group, manages $1.7 billion in assets. [ILLUSTRATIONS OMITTED] WITH $9 billion in assets under management, Leonard Green & Partners LP tops the list of the largest private equity firms headquartered in Los Angeles County. The firm closed its Green Equity Partners V LP fund last year with $5.3 billion in assets. It was originally targeted for $3.5 billion to $4 billion, but was significantly oversubscribed as investors such as public and corporate pension funds, endowments, foundations, banks and insurance companies responded with high demand. Leonard Green & Partners has invested in 45 companies since its inception with an aggregate value of $34 billion. The firm makes investments in a diversified group of industries including retail and consumer-related businesses, distribution, media, business services and health care. Recent investments include a partnership with Container Store. The privately held company projected revenues of $600 million for its 2007 fiscal year. Last year, the firm made successful exits from portfolio companies FTD Group Inc. and Dollar Financial. Founded in 1989, the firm typically makes investments in the range of $500 million to $2 billion. It targets businesses with positive cash flow and has seen returns of approximately 40 percent annually. The company is led by its three managing partners: John Danhakl, Peter Nolan and Jonathan Sokoloff. Founding partner Leonard Green died in 2002.
