PrismTech Acquires e*ORB, Adds Embedded and Real-time Capability to its 'Total CORBA Solution' -TCS-.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 2003

- Vertel's CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global  Business Unit Purchased by PrismTech

PrismTech, a leading vendor of distributed software infrastructure, today announced the acquisition of Vertel's CORBA(R) business unit, including e*ORB(TM), the market-leading embedded and real-time object request broker See ORB.

.

PrismTech's "Total CORBA Solution" now the broadest portfolio on the market

e*ORB joins PrismTech's OpenFusion(R) family of CORBA products adding an extremely small (low memory footprint Memory footprint refers to the amount of main memory that a program uses or references while running. This includes all sorts of active memory regions like code, static data sections (both initialized and uninitialized), heap, as well as all the stacks, plus memory required to hold ), fast and highly reliable ORB(TM) to its "Total CORBA Solution" (TCS (Transportation Control System) A widely used integrated information system for railroad transportation developed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was later implemented by Union Pacific when the companies merged. ) portfolio.

TCS is now the most complete CORBA solution on the market, comprising C++, Java(TM) and C language ORBs, sophisticated common object services (such as Notification, Logging and Trading) and connectivity products linking CORBA to J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) A platform from Sun for building distributed enterprise applications. J2EE services are performed in the middle tier between the user's machine and the enterprise's databases and legacy information systems. TCS now supports environments ranging from resource-limited board-based systems to enterprise-wide business applications and network management systems running on large multi-CPU servers.

PrismTech enters the high-growth market for embedded middleware

As more-and-more distributed applications are designed for low-footprint high-performance environments the embedded CORBA market is showing healthy growth. As the technology of choice for mission-critical yet memory-efficient systems, CORBA is increasingly deployed in industries such as telecommunications (particularly new 2.5G/3G applications), defense (software defined radio A wireless terminal (phone, PDA, etc.) that is reconfigurable via software. It enables wireless devices to be easily updated to new or later versions of the air interface and allows multiple interfaces to be supported. , avionic systems, command and control systems), consumer electronics, transportation, manufacturing and healthcare.

"We are proud to be adding the outstanding e*ORB product line to our middleware portfolio and thus become a leading vendor to the small-footprint, high-performance segment of the CORBA market," said Keith Steele, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of PrismTech. "PrismTech is the most progressive CORBA vendor and we look forward to further developing e*ORB and providing both existing and future customers with the highest levels of product quality, service and support."

"This is a win-win transaction for both PrismTech and Vertel," added Marc Maassen, President and CEO of Vertel. "With e*ORB, PrismTech extends its CORBA solution set, which can be seamlessly integrated into our M*Ware(TM) technology platform for our customers."
