The purpose of this book, as stated in the preface, is to present "principles, techniques and clinical uses of massage" in one volume. The book is divided into 11 chapters. Each chapter can be read alone, making the book very accessible and practical for use in school or in the clinic.

The chapter on physiological effects is a systematic presentation of the effects of massage on systems of the body, including the circulatory, nervous, and motor systems, with good, up-to-date references to support the information. The chapter on the therapeutic uses of massage lists specific therapeutic goals.
