University to Move its PlanetLab Distributed Computing Network

Operations From On-Campus Data Center to Equinix Internet Hubs

Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq:EQIX), the leading provider of network-neutral data centers and Internet exchange services, today announced that Princeton University will utilize Equinix Internet Business Exchange(TM) (IBX(R)) centers in the Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. areas to host the university's IT operations for its involvement in the PlanetLab program. The move will enable Princeton to implement a comprehensive global connectivity solution to support its involvement in the distributed computing network used by researchers at several of the world's top universities.

The PlanetLab program is an open and distributed testing environment for developing, deploying and accessing global network services, such as distributed storage, network mapping, peer-to-peer systems, distributed hash tables and distributed query processing. There are currently more than 115 machines at 45 sites around the world available to support both short-term experiments and long-running network services. Researchers from Princeton, MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, the University of Washington and other top academic institutions have used PlanetLab to conduct research projects that are leading the way for new and innovative network services.

By locating within the neutral environment of Equinix's IBX centers, Princeton will enhance its connectivity to the PlanetLab network through immediate access to more than 100 network service providers serving more than 90% of the world's Internet networks and users. Reaching this concentrated mass of their network partners within the same center will enable Princeton to bring its PlanetLab research projects closer to the other universities participating in the program. The streamlined path eliminates the cost and the performance degradation of connecting to geographically distributed partners via multiple transit circuits.
