Princess sister company orders another new ship.


LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 24, 1997--Princess Cruises announced today that sister company Peninsular and Oriental oriental

having some connection with the Orient.

The new U.K. ship, yet to be named, will be built at the Meyer Werft The Meyer Werft is one of the remaining large German shipyards, headquartered in Papenburg. Since 1997 it has been part of the Meyer Neptun Group together with Neptun Werft in Rostock.  shipyard in Germany at a cost of approximately $320 million for delivery in the spring of 2000. At 76,000 tons with a passenger capacity of 1,800, she will be the largest ship ever built for the U.K. market and will offer worldwide cruise itineraries.

The vessel will feature the hallmarks of P&O/Princess Cruises' newbuilds, namely spaciousness with an intimate feel, a wide array of choice in dining and entertainment and a large number of cabins -- 414, or 45 percent of the total -- with private balconies.

 its position as the leading line in the fastest growing of the major cruise markets. P&O Cruises' capacity will have grown by 150 percent during the second half of the decade. The new ship will join Arcadia (debuting November 1997), Oriana and Victoria, all serving the British cruise market.

The order follows the announcement less than a month ago of another P&O order, this time for Princess Cruises Princess Cruises is an American cruise line, based out of Santa Clarita, California, that operates cruise ships also shares the same building with Cunard Line headquarters. Sun Princess may refer to one of two cruise ships:
  • MS Sun Princess (1972)
  • MS Sun Princess (1995), a Sun class cruise ship operating with Princess Cruises since 1995
 series to be named Ocean Princess. Princess' Grand Class expansion now stands at $1.6 billion with a fleet capacity increase of over 60 percent between now and the end of the decade.

"Our cruise fleet is one of the largest and most successful in the world," Lord Sterling, chairman of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., said in London. "Our decision to order two further big ships in addition to those already scheduled for delivery will ensure that this success is carried through strongly to the 21st century."

Peter Ratcliffe, president of Princess Cruises, added: "We are delighted to see yet another fine ship joining our sister fleet in the U.K. This is the tenth new superliner scheduled to join our worldwide fleet in the last ten years and reinforces our position as the leader in the globilization of the cruise industry."

After introduction of all newbuilds on order or under construction, P&O's combined worldwide fleet will number 17 ships with approximately 25,000 berths.
