Princess Cruises to buy two more 'love boats' for $700 million total.

Princess Cruises' announcement last week that it will spend nearly $700 million to build two new ships should significantly increase the line's market share and could alter the character of its itineraries, said industry analysts. The capital investment will push the Century City-based line into the top rung of cruise lines

The line, which has nine cruise ships in use around the world, is currently building a 2,000-passenger ship that will be delivered in late 1995.

Peter Ratcliffe, president of Princess, said the addition of the new ships will require the company to increase its headquarters staff from about 1,000 to 1,400. He said the company will start adding personnel and office space in a year. Princess, he said, is committed to staying in the Century City area.

The first of the new ships will be a 1,950-passenger vessel that will be delivered in the spring of 1997 at a cost of just under $300 million.

The second ship will be one of the largest in the industry, with a capacity of about 2,500 passengers and a price tag of $385 million. The second ship will be designed specifically for Caribbean cruises and will begin service in late 1997. The Sun Princess For the Northern Yan empress, see .

, Princess will move from fourth to third place among the world's biggest cruise lines with the addition of the new ships.

Princess will surpass Kloster Cruise Ltd., a Scandinavian company that operates three lines, the most famous of which is Norwegian Cruise Line Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a company operating cruise ships, headquartered in Miami, Florida. It is most well known for its Freestyle Cruising, which means that there are no set times or seating arrangements for meals, nor is formal attire required. , said Major. According to information on the cruise industry compiled by Travel Agent, Princess currently has about 10 percent of the cruise market and that position will improve with delivery of the three new ships. Industry sources said Princess currently carries between 425,000 and 440,000 passengers a year, with annual revenues of about $1 billion. Princess is a private company and is not required to reveal its revenues.

Analysts said Princess is building bigger ships to compete with lines like Carnival that have big ships and market themselves as mass merchandisers of cruises.

Right now Princess ships range in size from 640 to 1,590 passengers. The average size of cruise ships is about 1,000 passengers.

In the cruise industry, Princess is considered more of a premium carrier and is closer to a luxury line than a high-volume company like Carnival.

Ratcliffe said Princess is not going to change its marketing strategy with the addition of the new ships.

"We are not going to get into the mass market. We are going to continue to be an upscale line and maintain our quality image. What this is really all about is that we want to increase our presence in the Caribbean. ... Right now we have about 120,000 passengers a year in the Caribbean and when we get our new ships we will increase that to 350,000," said Ratcliffe.
