Primary colours: new postgraduate papers target primary health care.


* Rural nurses and those at the community interface of primary health care are among those who will have the opportunity to enhance their skills through postgraduate study, as Otago Polytechnic Otago Polytech, or "TekOtago" focuses on skills based, technical education and occupational training, offering a range of New Zealand accredited degrees, diplomas and certificates in many areas of interest http://www.otagopolytechnic.ac.nz/programmes/areas-of-interest.html.  launches several new options within its programme for 2004.

Community Health Nursing Practice, a new paper, is open to registered nurses working in primary health care, and can count towards a Postgraduate Certificate A Postgraduate certificate is generally a postgraduate qualification designed to provide students with specialized knowledge that is less extensive than a Postgraduate diploma or Master's degree. , Diploma, or Master of Nursing.

Plus, the Polytechnic will offer a new postgraduate programme of study in rural primary health care next year. The predominantly distance-taught programme consists of four papers, with completion of two of these leading to a Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing (Rural), and completion of all four constituting a Postgraduate Diploma

 at Otago Polytechnic's School of Nursing, says that the new community health paper has been specifically designed in consultation with community nurses, educators and researchers to help meet objectives outlined in the New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. Meanwhile, the rural-focused programme recognises the distinct challenges--both in terms of practice and geography--that rural nurses face.

"Rural nurses tend to be the hub of rural medical services," says Jean. "The range of people they have to liase with, the types of situations they encounter, and the role they play in meeting the health care needs of entire communities is extraordinary."

Jean also notes that primary health care nurses interested in pursuing postgraduate study may be eligible for Ministry of Health Primary Health Scholarships. The scholarships cover fees, travel and accommodation, with applications closing on the 14 November. More information is available on the Ministry of Health web page at www.moh.govt.nz.
