Priest in 'child protection' quiz.

A WARWICKSHIRE priest has been quizzed by police over matters connected with child protection.

Father Steven Mellor, of Our Lady of the Angels RC Church, in Coton Road, Nuneaton, is currently on sick leave.

Today, the Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Rev Vincent Nichols, confirmed than an investigation has been launched that centres on Fr Mellor but the nature of this is not yet known.

The Most Rev Nichols, said: "For the last three weeks, Father Steven Mellor has been absent from his parish on sick leave, under orders from his doctor.

"At the same time, concerns have arisen, the content of which we cannot disclose.

"In accordance with our Diocesan Guidelines on child protection, we have given full co-operation to the proper investigating authorities who are dealing with this matter in its entirety.

"In order to assist all those involved, Fr Steven Mellor, who has also given full co-operation to the investigating authorities, is on administrative leave in accordance with our guidelines.

"Fr Mellor denies any wrongdoing.

Fr Mellor, aged 46, is a former member of the Church of England.

He was ordained a priest in 1996 and served in Solihull before moving to Our Lady of the Angels in 1997.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: "A 46-year-old man from Nuneaton has been interviewed under caution at Bedworth Police Station following allegations of inappropriate behaviour. A child protection investigation is now ongoing."
