Preview: The Forsythe Company.The U.S. premiere of William Forsythe's Three Atmospheric Studies is coming to both coasts this month. Founded in 1859 and opened in 1861, it is the oldest such institution still in operation in the United States. last spring, and less text-though still plenty of it--this piece places 16 dancers into a deep, cavernous cavernous /cav·er·nous/ (kav´er-nus) 1. pertaining to a hollow, or containing hollow spaces. 2. having a hollow sound, such as certain abnormal breath sounds. space. The piece, says a press release, is about "the horror and hypocrisy of war." But our reviewer, Roslyn Sulcas, found "childlike giggles" and movement "that possesses an animal-like, instinctive quality" when she saw it in Germany in 2005. Eventually, she wrote, the dance grows into something "violent, paroxysmal paroxysmal (per´ adj recurring in paroxysms. ." Feb. 22-23 at Cal Performances, Zellerbach Hall, Berkeley, and Feb. 28-March 3 at BAM Bam (bäm), town (1996 pop. 70,100), Kerman prov., SE Iran, on the intermittent Bam River.
