are compelling. Nonetheless, there are those women, lovely as they may be, who are clearly uncomfortable with pregnancy and would benefit from specific advice to relieve their aches and pains.

Preventing and Managing Back Pain During Pregnancy by Alicia M Silva, is an excellent resource for uncomfortable pregnant women and the people who care for them.

At the beginning of the book, Alicia Silva states: "Many women accept back pain as just one of the many 'side effects' of pregnancy ... however, back pain should not be considered a normal part of pregnancy". This is an important attitude. There is something women can and should do about back pain and Alicia Silva explains what that is.

Like the spine itself, this book is well-structured and well-articulated. The first part of the book describes how the spine is put together and explains the necessity of developing strength and flexibility to handle the extra demands of pregnancy.

The author continues to clearly explain why pain occurs and how to avoid it. She has exercise guidelines guidelines,

for specific trimesters and specific 'trouble areas' of the back. She also reviews moving through the day and performing ordinary tasks in a healthier manner. There are simple photographs and drawings to illustrate the proper postures and exercises. (It could be helpful to review these with a physical therapist to be sure they are being done correctly, though self-care at home is also beneficial).

The book covers pregnancy and follows through to postpartum postpartum /post·par·tum/ (post-pahr´tum) occurring after childbirth, with reference to the mother.
