We studied the sexual practices and knowledge about AIDS in a group of family planning female users in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. A descriptive study was carried out from November 2004 to February 2005. A socio-epidemiologic survey (sociodemographic characteristics, sexual practices, and knowledge about AIDS) was administered to 100 women. Additionally, an antibody against HIV (Ab-HIV) test was performed in willing participants of this group. The mean age of respondents was 25 years (range 18-44). Most of the women were housewives, and 82% of these women had a stable partner. The mean number of sexual partners was one. Only 12% used the condom inconsistently as a family planning method. One fifth of them reported having tattoos, and 10% had been users of non-injectable drugs. Also, 10% of them had a previous STD (Subscriber Trunk Dialing) Long distance dialing outside of the U.S. that does not require operator intervention. STD prefix codes are required and billing is based on call units, which are a fixed amount of money in the currency of that country. , and 11% mentioned cervical ulcer. Almost one fifth of them had intercourse during menstruation menstruation, periodic flow of blood and cells from the lining of the uterus in humans and most other primates, occurring about every 28 days in women. Menstruation commences at puberty (usually between age 10 and 17). , 28% practiced anal sex Noun 1. anal sex - intercourse via the anus, committed by a man with a man or woman

, and 46% had oral sex. Only 21% of women had enough knowledge about AIDS, and 36% knew three preventive measures (sexual abstinence, fidelity, and condom use). The prevalence of Ab-HIV was null. Although none of the women tested positive for HIV, risk factors to HIV infection were found. The development of preventive and gender perspective-based programs for the HIV/AIDS HIV/AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome  for the female population of Yucatan, Mexico are urgently needed.
