(ED) followed for 3 years. Men (n = 808) ages 20-80 years with self-reported ED were recruited from the original Men's Attitudes to Life Events and Sexuality (MALES) 2004 cohort of 2,912 men with self-reported ED from eight countries (USA, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Brazil), 30 months after the initial study. Self-reported comorbidities were assessed and compared with answers obtained from this cohort of 808 men in the 2001 survey. We found statistically significant increases in the proportion of men who self-reported diabetes (from 21% in 2001 to 30% in 2004), depression/anxiety (from 26% to 35%), and hypertension (from 44% to 51%), and non-significant increases in hypercholesterolemia Hypercholesterolemia Definition Hypercholesterolemia refers to levels of cholesterol in the blood that are higher than normal. Description Cholesterol circulates in the blood stream. It is an essential molecule for the human body. (from 43% to 48%) and cardiovascular disease/angina (from 26% to 29%) over the 30-month follow-up. These data provide further evidence that ED may be a sentinel for other vascular illness and suggest the need for awareness among clinicians of these comorbid associations. Further research to elucidate causality is needed. |
