After a day of being dabbed by fingers, the try-on makeup at store counters turns ugly.

Staphylococcus aureus Staphylococcus pyogenes
 (staf-ee-lo-KAH-cus OR-ee-us). This single-celled organism, which lacks a nucleus, is commonly found on human skin. But if it gets into the eye the bacterium bacterium /bac·te·ri·um/ (bak-ter´e-um) pl. bacte´ria   [L.] in general, any of the unicellular prokaryotic microorganisms that commonly multiply by cell division, lack a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles, and possess a cell  can cause conjunctivitis conjunctivitis (kənjəngtəvī`təs), inflammation or infection of the mucosal membrane that covers the eyeball and lines the eyelid, usually acute, caused by a virus or, less often, by a bacillus, an allergic reaction, or an  (pink, infected eye), says lead researcher Elizabeth Brooks.

Another stomach-turning discovery: Some makeup contained E. coli--a bacterium in faces that can spread if people don't wash their hands after using the restroom. Now that's a bad makeover.
