reporter Simon begins his book by introducing us to 17-year-old Irena at her post as a sniper in Sarajevo during the height of the war in Bosnia. The violence and ugliness of the situation pose a challenge to the author to make her character sympathetic to the reader, but Simon does so by showing us the war through her eyes and taking the reader through her transformation from a young Muslim girl interested in basketball and American movie stars to a warrior protecting her country and her people. Other characters--Irena's family, her friends and fellow snipers--are well developed and interesting.

The war in Bosnia is probably one of the least understood battlegrounds of our times, but Simon connects it with events in Afghanistan, New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
and Iraq. Simon also connects bin Laden to this precursor of later battles and he does it in a believable way. The violence and stark language will make the story difficult for some, but it is important that we see the world through the eyes of Irena and Simon, who spent time covering the siege of Sarajevo The Siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege in the history of modern warfare, lasting from April 5 1992 to February 29 1996.

It was fought during the Bosnian War between the forces of the Bosnian government, who had declared independence from Yugoslavia, and the Yugoslav
. Moore has a young, strong voice, perfectly suited to the young, tough Irena. The ending of the story is especially poignant and memorable. Nola Theiss, Sanibel, FL
