President signs veterans' bill.

A wide-ranging veterans' benefits Throughout history war veterans have received compensation. Roman soldiers were given rewards at the end of their service including cash or land (praemia). Augustus fixed the amount in AD 5 at 3000 denarii and by the time of Caracalla it had risen to 5000 denarii. [1]  bill that was supposed to have been completed last year has been sent to President Bush and signed into law.

The Veterans' Housing Opportunity and Benefits Improvement Act of 2006 expands a number of programs and benefits, such as adaptive housing grants for severely disabled veterans and broadens the list of diseases presumed to be related to a veteran's experience as a prisoner of war PRISONER OF WAR. Work on the original bill was delayed after it passed the Senate last September because of a dispute over the inclusion of an unrelated VA information technology bill, which was a priority for House Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Steve Buyer Stephen Earle Buyer (born November 26 1958) has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1993 for Indiana's At-large congressional district.  (R-Ind.).

In the interim, portions of the original benefits package sponsored by Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman were split off and cleared, then repackaged to include a number of bills from the House and Senate.

Changes to the measure then had to be renegotiated and passed by both chambers. As part of the compromise, the information technology provisions were removed, clearing the way for final approval. The benefits measure creates a five-year pilot program to provide adaptive housing grants of up to $14,000 to disabled veterans temporarily living with their families. Grants could be used for modifications such as building wheelchair ramps or installing bathroom grab bars.

The bill expands the list of diseases presumed under law to be related to a veteran's experience as a prisoner of war to include atherosclerotic heart disease atherosclerotic heart disease Cardiology A general term for the progressive narrowing and hardening of coronary arteries, due to atheroma deposition which, with time undergo calcification and ulceration Risk of progression ↑ Cholesterol, HTN, smoking, DM, , hypertensive hypertensive /hy·per·ten·sive/ (-ten´siv)
