The Historical Society of Rockland County has honored Piermont Commercial Corp. with a 1993 Historic Preservation Merit Award.

The award recognizes the outstanding preservation/restoration efforts by Piermont Commercial Corp. to preserve the 1(R)year-old Piermont Flywheel, according to Debra Walker, executive director of the Rockland County Historical Society.

The flywheel is located in Flywheel Park -- once the site of successive paper manufacturing operations and now adjacent to Piermont Landing, an elegant enclave of luxury townhomes and midrise residences developed at the edge of the Hudson River.

It was installed to power a generator for the Piermont Paper Co. and subsequently served several successor manufacturers who occupied the property before the village's industrial era ended in the 1980's.
