Presentations at American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting Feature Visiogen, Inc.

Favorable Reviews by Industry Clinicians Further Endorse Viability of Visiogen's Synchrony[R]

IRVINE, Calif. -- Visiogen, Inc. of Irvine, California, was featured in presentations at the annual American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, from November 11-13, 2006. The event provided researchers with the opportunity to discuss the benefits and attributes of Synchrony[R], the company's dual optic intraocular lens (IOL), through four direct paper presentations and three additional talks in which their research was presented.

The four presentations involving Visiogen included: "Visual Function in Daily Tasks: A Comparative Study Between Multifocal and Dual Optic Accommodating IOLs," by Ivan Ossma, M.D.; "Visiogen Synchrony IOL," by David F. Chang, M.D., "Spotlight on Pseudophakic IOLs 2006: Where Are We Now? Where Are We Going?" by Dr. Chang and Louis D. Nichamin, M.D., "Initial Experience With the Synchrony Dual-Optic Accommodating IOL," by Dr. George Beiko, BM, BCh, FRCSC; and "Comparative Study of Capsule Opacification Between Accommodating and Monofocal IOLs," by Andrea Galvis, M.D. and Dr. Ossma. Visiogen's Synchrony[R] IOL was also presented at different courses during the meeting, including: "Update on Other Accommodating IOL Designs," by I. Howard Fine, M.D.; "Cataract Surgery: Living on the Edge," by Robert H. Osher, M.D.; and "So New It Might Not Be True; Advances in Refractive Surgery," by George Waring III, M.D.

"The presentations at the AAO Conference further reinforce the acceptance of Synchrony by the ophthalmology community," said Luis G. Vargas, M.D., Medical Director at Visiogen. "Because the presenters are independent researchers, the positive communication about the technology is a strong validation for Synchrony."

The proprietary Synchrony system incorporates a dual optic lens with an easy-to-use pre-loaded injector. The entire system is self-contained and ready for use without the need for lens handling. The dual optic lens can be inserted through a 3.6-3.8 mm clear-corneal incision. The single-piece silicone lens unfolds in the eye upon insertion and features two optics connected by a spring system. The springs connect a 5.5-mm high power anterior optic and a 6-mm negative power posterior optic; the spring action moves the front optic and changes the eye's focus from near to far. This unique combination of positive- and negative-powered optics is customized for each patient.

Worldwide, the company has over 350 lenses implanted, and is currently conducting clinical trials for Synchrony in the United States. Ten investigational sites are now participating in the U.S. trial. The company announced that it had received the European CE Mark for the Synchrony[R] Accommodating IOL in June, which allows them to expand into post-marketing research studies within Europe to further build the scientific foundation for Synchrony.
