, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the September 23 issue. The articles were smart, well written, and provocative. I especially enjoyed Lynn-Beth Satterly's piece dealing with conscience and prescribing the pill. No doubt Satterly is a faithful Catholic who understands her medical practice as a vocation and not simply an occupation. And if she ever grows tired of medicine, I suggest she write full-time. I was taken aback, however, by her decision to prescribe a young woman oral contraceptives Oral Contraceptives Definition

Oral contraceptives are medicines taken by mouth to help prevent pregnancy. They are also known as the Pill, OCs, or birth control pills.
, and then tell her that abstinence abstinence: see fasting; temperance movements.  is really the best option.

Young people need heroes like Satterly, and they expect their heroes to challenge them. If Satterly is as close to her patients as she seems to be, I would bet that she would be able to change more than a few hearts and minds by refusing to help young women settle for mediocrity me·di·oc·ri·ty

 by prescribing them the pill. And if they find another doctor to fill their prescriptions, so be it. At least they'll know that Satterly believes in her patients and cares about them enough not to lower her standards, and theirs.
