Mathematical sciences faculty know their math, but they're not usually prepared to help pre-service teachers make K-12 instruction connections. In response, the Mathematical Association of America The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is a professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics education. Members include teachers at the college and high school level; graduate and undergraduate students; and mathematicians and scientists.  and other related organizations have collaborated to launch an initiative called Preparing Mathematicians to Educate Teachers.
