Preeclampsia and Exercise.


Any regular exercise during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy pregnancy, period of time between fertilization of the ovum (conception) and birth, during which mammals carry their developing young in the uterus (see embryo). The duration of pregnancy in humans is about 280 days, equal to 9 calendar months.  reduces a woman's risk of developing preeclampsia preeclampsia /pre·eclamp·sia/ (pre?e-klamp´se-ah) a toxemia of late pregnancy, characterized by hypertension, proteinuria, and edema.

. The more a woman exercises, the more the risk is reduced. Ninety-two women who were diagnosed with preeclampsia were compared to 88 controls. Thirty-four percent of the women with a history of preeclampsia reported getting no exercise during leisure time versus 18 percent of the controls. Any leisure activity resulted in a statistically significant relative risk of protection.
